From Lab Innovation to Industrial Demonstration

03 September, 2026

Industrial activity and modern consumer lifestyles generate vast volumes of contaminated wastewater, creating an urgent need for innovative, cost-effective treatment technologies that can tackle the most challenging waste streams.

Team Roberts is advancing a novel wastewater treatment technology based on ultrasonic cavitation, representing the third major technology platform developed by Professor William Roberts' group alongside innovations in desulfurization and battery recycling.

This project is being validated through a collaboration with SIRC and its subsidiary REVIVA, which specializes in remediating industrial wastewater. While Team Roberts developed the underlying technology and intellectual property, our industry partners have played a vital role in testing and demonstrating its performance under real-world conditions.

The demonstration in Yanbu marks Phase 2 of a three-phase development journey. Following successful laboratory-scale validation in 2025 (Phase 1), the team led by Varaha Sarvothaman progressed to factory acceptance testing and site acceptance testing before reaching this important pilot demonstration stage.

A huge thank you to the team who helped bring this milestone to life, including Shekhar Kulkarni, Ümit Görçüm, Khalid Alkhayat, Lutfor Sheikh, and Deoras Prabhudharwadkar, whose efforts were instrumental in executing the demonstration and capturing these visuals.

Looking ahead, the next phase will focus on scaling the technology to treat 10-50 tonnes of wastewater per day across multiple difficult-to-treat industrial streams, with the goal of delivering more cost-effective and sustainable treatment solutions for industry.

Research innovation is most impactful when it reaches the field, and partnerships like these help bridge the gap between discovery and deployment.
